DEAD BY DAYLIGHT THE HILLBILLY STATUE from Kotobukiya which was sculpted by Masato Ohata is now available for pre-order!

The Hillbilly is a disfigured man who was abused by his parents and is now a savage murderer. Masato Ohata, a sculptor who loves dark elements and settings, has beautifully sculpted this ominous character as he can be seen dragging his feet across the ground as he chases after Survivors! We had the opportunity to hear Masato Ohata’s process of sculpting as he put all of his heart and soul into each and every scar on this statue.

INTERVIEW

What did you focus on the most when sculpting The Hillbilly?

I focused the most on the statue’s pose which shows The Hillbilly as he chases after Survivors while dragging his feet. I hope you will be able to visualize the unique running style of The Hillbilly. I also made sure to represent the distortion of the spine and the melted skin that practically cover the eyes, making it required for the eyeball parts to be inserted from behind the face components. And of course, I had a lot of fun sculpting all the wrinkles in the pants!

What aspect of The Hillbilly, as a character, do you like the most? Speak your love to the fullest.

My favorite aspect of The Hillbilly in the game is the eeriness of its quiet and obscure motions. I especially love looking at The Hillbilly’s movements which looks as though he’s moving extremely fast from a distance, and as he gets closer, you start to see that he is actually dashing over with a limp. I also like the teachable unique Hillbilly perk, “Tinkerer”, which when the Generator is repaired to 70%, the Killer is granted the Undetectable Status Effect for a certain period of time. It really makes my heart race when The Hillbilly approaches from behind making absolutely no noise. I also love the whirring sounds you can hear in his terror radius music as he swiftly approaches his target.

Why did you sculpt this statue in this pose?

The pose was originally designed by Kotobukiya Product Planner SHO-GUN. SHO-GUN is also a huge fan of Dead by Daylight and she has actually been the one that thinks up of the poses for each statue in this lineup. We both love Dead by Daylight, so it’s fun being able to share information about this game as we work together.

Can you explain the unusual features of the pose in this statue?

Normally, when I sculpt a running pose for a statue, when the right foot is in front, the left hand should come to the front to give it a realistic look of running. However, in this rendition of The Hillbilly, the right hand and right foot are in front. I hope that his clumsy way of running will add to the overall eerie look of The Hillbilly.

Can you share how you sculpted the distinctive body and scars of The Hillbilly in this statue?

Every time I sculpt a figure, I am reminded of just how detailed the design for each character truly is. I don’t think there is a single person who looks at every scratch on a character from 360 degrees every time they look at a character, so I’m sure you, too, will be able to find new discoveries in The Hillbilly if you have the opportunity to get your hands on this statue.

The Hillbilly was born with a twisted spine, and thus, this character can be seen with hair growing down to his shoulders; an unusual place for hair to be growing out of. The Hillbilly was born disfigured, and his parents abhorred, abused, and locked this sad individual up. I sculpted this statue by imagining each episode in his life as well as what kind of history could be hiding behind each of his scars; from the staples used to hold up his wounds, down to the way the bone can almost be seen on his left hand.

When The Hillbilly grew up, he murdered his parents with the weapon he has in-hand and continued to commit further atrocities by torturing animals that were allowed to run free. The loud whirring of the chainsaw at the farm during the night can be heard as The Hillbilly’s cry of both joy and sadness. The Hillbilly is a character I learned to like more and more each day as I worked on this statue.

Next up in the Dead by Daylight statue series is The Wraith!

The Trapper is the first statue in the Dead by Daylight statue lineup by Kotobukiya and will be available in stores (in Japan) in February. Up next in the lineup are The Hillbilly and The Wraith. The Wraith is also another character I have learned to love the more I research him.

I think The Wraith has the widest shoulder out of all of the characters thus far. But despite his large upper body, his legs are very thin and perfectly match my ideal physique (lol). As such, it is very fun sculpting The Wraith! I sometimes wonder if it’s alright for me to be enjoying working on this character so much!

As for The Trapper, the three points I want everybody to pay attention to are the overalls, the details on The Trapper’s body that you can see in the crevice between the overall and the skin, and, of course, the butt.

Please be sure to check out all three statues in this lineup!

What did you focus on the most when sculpting the details on the hammer and chainsaw?

I made all the accessories exactly according to the data I received. The hammer in particular has been produced with great attention to detail; from the way the bark of the wood on the handle can be seen slightly peeling off, down to the way the nails look as though they are popping out. Please take a look at these details in person!

Favorite Horror Movie/Character
I love all J-Horror titles. I love watching foreign horror films as well, though. My favorite J-Horror films are (albeit the popularity) The Grudge series, Reincarnation, and The Inerasable. The Inerasable’s novel is also really good. When it comes to foreign horror films, of course my top are Hello Dracula, Hello Dracula 2, and Hello Dracula 3. The Hello Dracula series is my bible. My favorite characters in any horror movie are Master Jiangshi if we are strictly talking about ghosts, and Man-Choi if we are talking about my favorite overall character.
